In a previous post I shared some lead magnet ideas for your online service based business, and also recommended Canva templates (which you can find in my shop 😉) to help you whip up something in a jiffy…

But, whether you choose to go with an ebook, a workbook or a checklist, there are some pages, I believe, you should always try to include in your freebie to make it easier for your audience to consume.

1️⃣A beautiful cover page with the freebie title. How many files are currently sitting in your downloads folder on your computer? Your cover will make it easy to spot your document so that it does not get lost in that sea of downloads.

2️⃣An about page introducing you & your business. You want your new subscribers to become familiar with you and your business right off the bat. Your about page is where you get to start building connection and trust with those who are most likely going to hire you in the future.

3️⃣An overview page summarizing the core content. Give your new subscriber a brief of what they can expect from this document they just downloaded. This will encourage them to actually use the lead magnet instead of letting it gather virtual dust bunnies.

4️⃣Content pages explaining your main points. The most important part of your lead magnet is the actual content, and you need to be sure your design presents this content in the best possible way.

5️⃣Call-to-action page introducing your service. The most important page when it comes to the next step you want your new subscriber to take - not adding a CTA page will have you losing out on opportunities to sign on new clients!

Whether you are creating an ebook, workbook, checklist or any sort of PDF for your lead magnet, you are going to need some design help to put it all together.

If design is not your strong suit (and that’s totally okay!) you may struggle for hours putting something semi-decent together. You may even find some really cool free templates in Canva which you can piece together to create your lead magnet.

While these are both options you can explore, here are the stumbling blocks that may just trip your up and cost you even more time:

🧱 your content won’t flow easily, making it hard for your audience to consume and actually take the action you want them to take.

🧱 the look and feel of your document may not appeal to your audience OR it may not look professional at all which could make them doubt your expertise - yikes! 

🧱 mix matching templates from the Canva library may look odd if you don’t know how to design for total brand cohesion, which will throw off the person trying to consume the content of the lead magnet. 

So, with all this in mind, don’t you think a template that has a) been designed to put your content in the best light AND b) already has all the pages you need so you don’t have to worry about your lead magnet looking mismatched, is the perfect solution?

Here are 3 common mistakes I see many new online service providers make with their opt-in offer:

1️⃣Using A Service & Pricing Guide As A Lead Magnet

When you are promoting a paid offer online, you should always make sure that important information regarding your offer is easy to find. This becomes even more necessary with services because people are less likely to jump through hoops to learn about a service, especially if they don’t know you.

I’ve seen many online service providers use their service & pricing guide as an opt in – this is a big mistake for two reasons…

Your service & pricing guide does not offer any sort of value to your audience and does not give you the opportunity to build trust with people who come into contact with your business.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but the reason I believe it is a mistake to offer a discovery call as an opt in is that you are giving up your valuable time (and expertise) to someone who can easily turn around and not even give you a second thought. Or worse, use what they’ve gotten out of the call and do it themselves!

3️⃣ Creating An Opt In That Competes With Your Service

This is a BIG NO-NO because when you create a freebie that directly competes with your main offer, you are building a list of subscribers who are unlikely to hire you. You are attracting subscribers who would like to DIY instead of outsource – not a potential paying client.
